Explanation

Gauge (also called tension) is perhaps the most important measurement in knitting. It tells you how many stitches and rows you get in a specific area, usually 10x10 cm. Your personal gauge depends on how tightly or loosely you hold the yarn, the needles you use, and the type of yarn you are knitting with. Even if you use the same yarn and needle size as the pattern, your gauge may be different from the designer's. Therefore, it is crucial to knit a gauge swatch before starting a project.
